Ketogenic metabolic therapy for chronic kidney disease – the pro part

Thomas Weimbs, Jessianna Saville, Kamyar Kalantar-Zadeh

Ketogenic Metabolic Therapy (KMT) is an emerging medical nutrition approach addressing conditions rooted in metabolic dysfunction, including chronic kidney disease (CKD). With CKD often linked to hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, and diabetes from overnutrition, KMT’s carbohydrate restriction offers a therapeutic alternative. Research indicates that KMT, including plant-dominant versions, is safe for CKD patients and may improve renal function, contrasting with traditional treatments that only slow CKD progression. Despite misconceptions—such as KMT requiring high protein or meat intake—this therapy is gaining recognition as a viable medical nutrition therapy. KMT can broaden the kidney care toolbox and may become a first-line option for CKD associated with metabolic disorders, obesity, and polycystic kidney disease.
